Broadweave's Business Model

It was suggested to me that I should Google Broadweave and various western states to see what Broadweave has been up to in other places. From what I've seen, I'm wondering if they are finding their greenfield business model to have some problems:
  • Broadweave Arizona - Broadweave applied for a cable license for a development in Show Low, AZ, but was questioned as to their plans to expand to the entire city and subsequently withdrew their application.
  • Article about greenfield telecom - Based on this article, Broadweave only had one development from when it started in 2003 to when this article was written in 2006. The article points out at the bottom that these projects are "glacially slow." In this article CEO Steve Christensen says they are "growing like crazy". As of today, 2008, they have two active developments instead of the one from 2006, and around 1000 customers instead of the 800 mentioned in this story.
  • Broadweave Texas - In 2006 Broadweave was announcing intentions to enter the Texas market. While there is some speculation Broadweave is purchasing the OEN network in Houston, it doesn't appear that Broadweave is actually operating in Texas at this time.
  • There are also indications Broadweave has, or had, intentions of operating in Nevada (search for Broadweave on the page), California, and New Mexico as well.
So what does this tell us about Broadweave? Well, we know that their initial business plan was for greenfield development, and that they started in 2003. We know that in 5 years they have grown their subscriber base to 1000 - not big enough to be considered much of a success. We know that in 2006 they made moves to operate in 4 states outside of Utah, but in 2 years haven't succeeded much there, either.

So I'm thinking Broadweave needs this iProvo deal just about as bad as the Provo politicos do.
